How geofencing and remote attendance work

Why a clock-in can show "Remote" for one person and "Outside geofence" for another, doing the same thing.

What happens next

If your workspace uses location-based rules, a clock-in is checked against your assigned location's radius unless you're individually marked exempt (an admin-set flag) — an exempt person is always treated as within range, regardless of where they actually clock in from.

For everyone else, clocking in outside the radius produces one of two different outcomes depending on context: if an administrator has scheduled you for remote/work-from-home on that exact date, it's recorded as "Remote" — a normal, expected outcome, not a problem. If there's no such scheduled override, it's recorded as "Outside geofence" instead — the same underlying fact (you weren't at your assigned location), but flagged as unexpected since nothing on record explains it.

Important notes

• "Remote" and "Outside geofence" both mean you clocked in away from your assigned location — the difference is entirely about whether that was expected (a scheduled remote day) or not.

• Being marked exempt is a per-person setting an administrator controls — it is not something you can set for yourself.

Troubleshooting

• You're legitimately working remotely but keep showing "Outside geofence" instead of "Remote" — ask your administrator to schedule that day (or an ongoing pattern) as a remote work day for you specifically.

• Your clock-in was rejected outright, not just flagged — that means strict location enforcement is on — ask an administrator to check Settings > Clock In, or to mark you exempt if your role genuinely doesn't have a fixed location.
